Samson Quantum-8 Synthetic-Rope Lifting Slings Outperform
Cable-Laid Wire Slings for CNOOC Jacket Installation 

Ferndale, WA – September 4, 2008 – Samson Quantum-8 was fabricated into four heavy lifting slings and used by the China Offshore Oil Engineering Corporation (COOEC), a division of China National Offshore Oil Company, in the successful installation of a jacket in China’s Pan Yu natural gas field. The installation marks one of the heaviest lifts using synthetic rope slings to date, where the jacket installed was 75m wide by 75m long by 213m high and weighed 16,213 metric tons. The COOEC reports that Quantum-8 outperformed slings made of wire or other synthetic webbing due to its light weight, ease of handling, and speed of rigging. They also reported that they could accomplish attaching the jacket to the lifting points manually. The result was faster and more efficient operations during the installation, which is critical in difficult applications and where windows of calm seas are often short.  
Quantum-8 is a patented construction using Samson’s exclusive DPX™ fiber technology, blending lightweight high-strength Dyneema® fiber with polyester to achieve a higher coefficient of friction. The resulting increased grip is important to splice termination, particularly in this application. Gaylin International Pte Ltd in Singapore, a Samson master distributor and partner who serves the Asia Pacific market, fabricated the slings from 120mm diameter Quantum-8. The design specifications called for spliced grommets with protected eyes on both ends and extra protection for the mid-body of the sling. The sling was ABS witness-tested at 836 metric tons with a proof load of 245 metric tons. Because Gaylin carries a significant stock of Samson high-performance ropes, they were able to respond quickly with fabrication and delivery to the specifications required by the COOEC.
