Samson Awarded 12th Patent for MLX Rope

Ferndale, WA – February 24, 2012 – Samson, the worldwide leader in high-performance rope, has just been awarded U .S. Patent No. 8,109,072. The patent has been awarded to Samson for the development of the technology to blend high modulus polypropylene (HMPP) with high modulus polyethylene (HMPE) together in fiber rope products. This is the first time HMPP has been used in the cordage industry.

Samson's MLX is the first rope in the market with this fiber blend. Filling a gap in the market, MLX provides higher performance characteristics than ropes made with traditional fibers such as nylon and polyester, but it is less costly than a rope made of 100% HMPE. Dr. Rafael Chou, Samson's VP of R&D, explained, "The original concept was to create a product that could be marketed at half the price and half the strength of a rope made with 100% HMPE. The solution may seem obvious at first glance; simply produce a rope with less HMPE. However, this results in a rope that is too small to resist the abrasion caused by most applications. The next concept was to blend HMPE with a "filling material" to increase size. But unless the filler contributes to the property of the rope, it would only be adding material cost and size with no better performance characteristics than the rope made with less HMPE. So the challenge was to find a material that could be added to increase the volume and contribute to the performance properties. Innegra, an HMPP fiber, was selected as the filling material for both its strength and modulus. It works well with HMPE as a load-sharing component for its low stretch. While Innegra is a more expensive fiber than the other filling materials that were considered, the fact that it contributes positively to the performance of the rope made it a viable option. The creation of this technology fills the gap in our product offering between premium and commodity grade products."

Samson's research and development team leads the industry in the creation of enabling technologies for the cordage industry. This is Samson's 12th patent in nine years.
