Morning Light Sails into Theaters with Samson Rigging Lines

Ferndale, WA/Lafayette, LA – October 14, 2008 – Samson, the worldwide leader in high-performance cordage, is proud to have been the chosen supplier of the rigging lines used on the Morning Light, the state-of-the-art 52' racing yacht that participated in the Transpac 2007 with a crew of 15 young sailors from 18 to 23 years old. Their journey, the brainchild of TP52 Class Association executive director Tom Pollock and veteran Transpac racers Leslie DeMeuse-Disney and Roy Disney, is documented in the Disney film Morning Light, which opens in select theaters on October 17. The film follows the crew’s selection, their training, and their 2,500-mile race against professional racers. Samson WarpSpeed® and Flavored Ice made the journey with them.
Contacted early in the project when the rigging initially used on the yacht failed, Samson was asked to customize the lines that would ultimately take the young crew to a third-place finish overall in Division 2. They placed second among TP52s.
Samson, in conjunction with Morning Light chief rigger Scott Easom, equipped the crew with high-performance running rigging for their voyage. “I was given the responsibility of helping those kids safely to Hawaii,” says Easom. “Since I couldn’t be on board with them, I sent them out there with the best: Samson. The crew’s experience level was at a point where they didn't need any mid-Pacific ‘issues.’ Easom Rigging and Racing is proud to have been able to bring the Morning Light team together with Samson.”

Samson WarpSpeed®, a double-braid rope consisting of a 24-stand polyester cover over a Dyneema® core, is extremely popular with high-performance racers because of its strength, low stretch, and abrasion resistance. Flavored Ice is the companion to Samson’s high-performance single-braid ropes. Its cover-only construction is a blend of Vectran® LCP and Zylon® PBO fibers, which provides protection from heat buildup and abrasion caused by friction under load. Flavored Ice was also used on Roy Disney’s Transpac 2007 racer Pyewacket.
